Appalachian Roots in Michigan Soil

We Are

We love welcoming guests from all over to The Southerner.

Folks will find our dishes reflect Chef/Owner Matt Millar’s Appalachian roots and his passion for the regional cooking traditions of the American South, especially New Orleans & the low country.

At the core of The Southerner is a commitment to honoring the incredible Southern cooks on whose shoulders we stand in an uncomplicated yet elevated approach to cooking.

About

In the 1950s, many Appalachian families moved to Michigan seeking work in the auto industry. It’s a familiar story to many people with roots in the American South, and we strive to tell part of this story through our meals.

Cooking is a serious business in the South, and the traditional flavor resides within the relocated sons and daughters that now call Michigan home.
